Mind mapping software allows mind maps to be created on a computer. The usual techniques used in mind mapping are available, such as using images, writing words, starting with a central idea and mapping out wider associated ideas. The software also allows the ideas to be moved around and arranged according to the structure required.
Many software packages also include some sample maps to help generate ideas and to help get started.
Common Features of Mind Mapping Software
Most of the mind mapping software available has a number of common features.
- Saving and editing. One of the major advantages of generating a mind map using software on a computer is that the map can be saved and amended.
- Color and images. It is possible to include images on a mind map, so pictures, clip art and illustrations can be added to the map for extra creativity.
- Collapse and expand. Branches of a mind map can be collapsed and expanded, so showing the whole map, or just key branches.
- Printing. Maps can be printed out, either the whole map or selected sections of the map. This can be particularly useful when dealing with a large map. Having a ‘see at a glance’ paper format can help generate further ideas and spot connections not always easy to see on a computer screen.
- Including links to other documents. Files such as word processed documents, presentations, video clips and audio files can be linked into a mind map. This allows more detail to be added by using more appropriate software. For example, a mind map for publishing a book could show branches for each chapter in the book and each branch can link to a word processed document containing an outline of the chapter.

- Changing the font size and color of words written on the map.
- Changing the shape and layout of the branches and the whole map.
- Links back to the supplier website for help with the maps and access to a customer forum.
